3 questions for...

Zalan Szekely
Co-founder
AutoPal

AutoPal is Hungary's first peer-to-peer carsharing service. How did you start and what have been the main challenges so far?

(Source: AutoPal)

I used to manage a small fleet of cars in the traditional car rental market when I realized that the demand for quality and affordable car rental services surpasses the supply in Hungary. When exploring different opportunities for expansion, I discovered the concept of peer-to-peer carsharing and decided to introduce it to the Hungarian market. I believe our initial challenges were not different from any other P2P players’ challenges: 1) entering a two-sided market required us to ensure one side of the market in order to attract the other, and 2) securing a good insurance deal. Initially, we decided to partner with small local car rental companies, which not only allowed us to run our initial tests and fine-tune our product, but also gave us some time to secure our insurance deal with Aegon.

According to your website there are currently 133 vehicles available on the platform, but just some of them are owned by private users. Are carsharing users in Hungary willing to share their own cars? What are the benefits for them?

As mentioned above, we started our operation by partnering with some small car rental businesses, hence the unique composition of our supply. Nevertheless, our mission is to introduce the concept P2P car-sharing and its benefits to more and more individual users. The benefits are similar to any other market: cover the cost of car ownership, generate some extra revenue, and contribute to the environment.

(Source: AutoPal)

All in all, Hungarians are more attached to their cars than their Western peers; however, the financial benefit of sharing their car is also much more attractive considering the lower income. Obviously, the key is to know your market and your customers and have the right way of communication when emphasizing the benefits and handling fear.

How do you see the future of carsharing in Hungary and what is your most important management task in the next 12 months?

I believe carsharing has a bright future ahead of it in Hungary. 56% of the Hungarian households do not have a car, whilst the 3.3 million cars out there are sitting idle 95.7% of the time. Car rental services in Hungary are either not affordable or they are available at a fairly poor quality. Public transportation only provides a feasible alternative on some main routes. Both the inbound and domestic tourism are booming and fuelling the demand and the share of online transactions is also increasing. The sharing economy in general is also gaining space in the last decade: we have Airbnb, Blablacar, and Uber was also extremely popular before getting banned.

(Source: AutoPal)

Our most important goal for the next 12 months is growth. We’re currently closing our first round of investment, which will allow us to scale our customer acquisition. We’ll also roll out a brand new design with improved UX and planning to go completely paperless to improve the overall customer experience.
