Paris paves the road for carsharing

Round trip carsharing operators in Paris have long requested street parking from the City authorities. The very desirable street level spots were during years an exclusivity of Autolib, Paris' innovative one-way carsharing system. Traditional carsharing operated from garages, which didn't offer proper visibility to city inhabitants and hindered the adoption of these services.

But in 2015, once the Autolib project finished deployment, the city started deployment of street parking to round trip services. At the beginning of last year, it held a public auction to license the exploitation of street parking for round-trip operators. The auction process awarded more spots to the operators that offered the highest bids. A total of 226 street parking spots were licensed to 4 well known carsharing operators: Zipcar, Communauto, Ubeeqo and the Bollore group.

At the same time, the city created "SVP" (Services de Véhicules Partagés), a label for carsharing services that respected high carbon emission standards and gave advantageous conditions to operators that use electric or hybrid cars.

City officials say that they plan to distribute more spots in the future, depending on their adoption rate among customers. A few months after the deployment, the first reports indicate that the new street parking certainly increased the visibility of the round trip carsharing services but did not generate a short term boom in membership subscriptions.

Round trip carsharing is one of the many mobility options that Parisiens now have available to give up car ownership, including public transportation, shared bikes, free floating carsharing, and Cityscoot, a new free floating scooter sharing system currently in beta tests. The percentage of homes with a motor vehicle in Paris has decreased slightly since the beginning of the 2000's.
